Research Tips for News/Events Research

Tips for Researching Historical Events and News

  • Use the Date Limiters in the ProQuest databases to make sure you are searching for the events when they happened. Don't just put the specific date of the event in the box; see how your topic was reported on as the story unfolded over at least a few days to a week.
  • Be sure to use the names of relevant organizations, people, locations you found in your preliminary research(countries or cities where events occurred).
  • When researching legal issues, use the names of the laws when possible ( e.g. Defense of Marriage Act, Civil Rights Act, Patriot Act) and/or court cases (e.g., United States v. Windsor--also known as Windsor)
